SICILY - THE MEDITERRANEAN’S ANCIENT WINE POWERHOUSE
Sicily is one of the most dynamic and historically rich wine regions in the world, blending ancient traditions with modern innovation. As the largest island in the Mediterranean, Sicily has a vast and diverse terroir, ranging from sun-drenched coastal vineyards to high-altitude plantings on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna. This remarkable diversity allows the region to produce an impressive array of wine styles, from bold reds to fresh whites and distinctive fortified wines.
Sicily’s climate is predominantly warm and dry, with cooling influences from the surrounding sea that help moderate temperatures and preserve acidity in the grapes. The volcanic soils of Etna provide a unique mineral character to the wines, while the island’s varied terrains contribute to the complexity and individuality of different appellations.
The region is best known for its indigenous grape varieties, many of which have been cultivated for centuries. Nero d’Avola is Sicily’s flagship red grape, producing wines with deep fruit flavours, firm structure, and excellent aging potential. Frappato, known for its lighter, floral profile, adds elegance and finesse to many blends. White wines made from Grillo, Catarratto, and Carricante offer crisp acidity, vibrant citrus notes, and a strong sense of place. Meanwhile, Marsala, Sicily’s historic fortified wine, continues to be appreciated for its rich, complex character.
